Vigeo Combines Acceptance Of All Nigerian Cards In One Device

In a development that should push along Nigeria’s move toward a cashless society, the Vigeo Group has introduced a point-of-sale terminal that can accept all Nigerian bankcards.

Individual banks have driven the POS infrastructure in Nigeria to the point that merchants must deploy separate POS terminals to accept their cards, a spokesperson for Vigeo tells PaymentsSource. Using the CitiServe POS terminal, merchants now may accept all issuers’ cards, including EMV debit and credit chip cards, with one device, the company noted in a Jan. 3 press release.

“This terminal would be the first to break away from this norm as it accepts all the major electronic payment cards, including Visa, MasterCard and local card brand Verve,” he says. “It is linked to the Nigerian Inter Bank Settlement System.”

The CitiServe terminals also are the first in the country to allow the ability to reverse a transaction if the customer changes his mind after purchasing an item.
