A number of Olympic and Paralympic fans who tried to purchase event tickets March 16 to next year’s London games were unable to complete orders March 16 if their Visa-branded payment card expired before a certain date.
“While we are aware that cards which expire before August 2011 are not currently being accepted,” Visa Europe said in a press release this week. “As a priority, we are working closely with all relevant parties to resolve this issue as soon as possible.”
The problem occurred because consumers now only register for event tickets and do not need to actually pay for them until later this year. Visa is the exclusive payment partner for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Some 6.6 million tickets are available for both events, according to the Olympics’ website.
Visa also stated that as of March 21, all Visa cards with an expiration date of May 2011 or later will be accepted at the London 2012 ticket application website. Cardholders with an April expiration date will receive a replacement card before the ticket registration deadline on April 26.
Until the matter is resolved, Visa has advised consumers seeking to register for tickets to use a prepaid card.
