On Feb. 9, Visa said it would pay $190 million for PlaySpan in a deal it described as complementary to its 2010 purchase of CyberSource Corp. for $2 billion (see story).

PlaySpan, of Santa Clara, Calif., sells an online currency consumers may use to buy digital content within online games or to pay the fees to access those games. On its website, PlaySpan lists the popular Facebook game Farmville and the online sword-and-sorcery game EverQuest among the games that accept its currency.

The purchase should give Visa the tools to improve its status as a payments option in online games, social networks and in smartphone apps, analysts say.
