Helped by a rise in service and data-processing revenue and strong international transaction growth, Visa Inc. on May 5 reported a fiscal second quarter profit of $881 million, up 23.6% from $713 million a year earlier. Net operating revenue increased 14.8%, to $2.25 billion from $1.96 billion.
U.S. Visa debit card transactions for the quarter ended March 31, including PIN-based Interlink purchases, totaled 7.3 billion, up 12.3% from 6.5 billion. Sales volume rose 13.1%, to $277 billion from $245 billion.
Outside the U.S., debit transactions totaled 1.4 billion, up 16.7% from 1.2 billion. Sales were up 33.3%, to $68 billion from $51 billion.
U.S. credit and charge card transaction volume totaled 2.3 billion, up 9.5% from 2.1 billion. Sales were up 9.3%, to $199 billion from $182 billion.
Outside the U.S., credit and charge card transaction volume was up 8.6%, to 3.8 billion from 3.5 billion. Sales totaled $317 billion, up 19.2% from $266 billion.
Regionally, purchase volume in the Asia Pacific region totaled 2.6 billion, up 4% from 2.5 billion; sales were up 17.9%, to $230 billion from $195 billion. In Latin America, transaction volume rose 21.4%, to 1.7 billion from 1.4 billion, while sales were up 32.8%, to $77 billion from $58 billion.
In Central Europe, the Middle East and Africa, transaction volume totaled 476 million, up 33.3% from 357 million; sales rose 30.4%, to $30 billion from $23 billion. In Canada transaction volume totaled 421 million, up 8.8% from 387 million; sales totaled $48 billion, up 11.6% from $43 billion.
