Wachovia Purchase Boosts Wells Fargo Debit Portfolio

With the finalization of its Wachovia Corp. acquisition (CardLine, 12/31), Wells Fargo & Co. remains the nation's second-largest debit card issuer with approximately 28 million mostly Visa-branded cards. San Francisco-based Wells Fargo issued 17.5 million cards as of the end of 2007, before its purchase of Charlotte, N.C.-based Wachovia, according to PaymentsSource.com, SourceMedia's payments Web site. In 2007, Wachovia was the fifth-largest debit card issuer with 10.4 million cards. Wells Fargo purchased Wachovia after outbidding Citigroup Inc.
