Western Union Resumes Money Transfers into Greece

Western Union announced that it will reinstate international remittances into Greece, after suspending them following the country's decision to shut down all banks amid a mounting debt crisis.

With the change, international and domestic Western Union Money Transfer transactions are available at roughly 270 of the 1,000 WorldBridge Payment Institution (Paylink) locations in Greece. Customers can receive cash in amounts that are not subject to the country's capital controls, Western Union said in a July 27 press release.

"To reinstate money transfer services for our customers is a great triumph, as we know the need to move money into Greece has never been more relevant than it is today," said Giovanni Angelini, senior vice president and general manager for Europe at Western Union, in the release.

Additionally, Western Union said it is working on expanding its in-bound payment locations so that they include all 1,800 locations represented by Paylink and the Greek Postal Authority, ELTA - Hellenic Post.

Colorado-based Western Union stopped service in Greece in late June ahead of the country's referendum addressing creditor proposals as the country faced a default on its debt.

Since then, the country reached a deal following discussions with fellow Eurozone countries to avoid an exit from the common currency. Western Union began restarting some of its services July 7, as the situation in Greece began to improve.
