Wincor Nixdorf AG has opened a subsidiary office in Sydney, Australia, the German ATM vendor says. In a statement, the firm says it already has struck deals with "independent ATM operators as well as major financial institutions," but provided no details. The company says it hopes to make money from an effort under way in Australia to replace OS/2 ATM operating software with Microsoft Windows, with ATM operators no longer "necessarily buying their software from the same vendor as their hardware," the statement says. Globally, Wincor Nixdorf shipped 76,041 ATMs in 2008, up 24.3% from 61,170 machines in 2007 (CardLine Global, 9 Feb.).
