HCE technology allows issuers, retailers and other mobile wallet providers to support NFC payments without access to a phone's secure element. Google, Visa, MasterCard and several other companies have begun supporting HCE in recent months.

"HCE … is opening up this market to different players, allowing them to operate more quickly and flexibly in future," states Markus Braun, CEO of Munich-based Wirecard, in a March 25 news release.

Mobile payment systems can be combined with other types of accounts, such as loyalty and voucher systems, Wirecard says in the release.

Earlier this year, Wirecard integrated Bluetooth Low Energy into its mobile wallet as another wireless payment option.

"Our aim is to offer innovative solutions for a mobile, cashless future," Braun says in the release.
