Wirecard, Visa partner for contactless push in Romania

Wirecard is partnering with Visa in Romania on a white-label digital wallet service enabling any card issuer to offer mobile contactless payment solutions through a wallet featuring card controls and account notifications.

The solution leverages the tokenized Visa Digital Commerce App, which Wirecard will commercialize to target issuers looking to support mobile contactless payments without having to develop their own digital wallets, according to a Thursday press release.

Romania, with a population of 22 million, has strong contactless payments penetration with broad merchant support and the partnership will help banks of all sizes now leap to contactless via mobile devices, Wirecard said in the release.

“Switching from classic cards to mobile payments occurs at a high pace, both globally and in Romania,” said Utku Ogrendil, Wirecard’s managing director in Romania, in the release.

“As the fundamental shift from plastic to digital is accelerating, Visa’s approach is to enable our clients and partners to create and deploy new commerce experiences,” said Catalin Cretu, Visa’s general manager for Romania, Croatia, Slovenia and Malta, in a press release.
