MILWAUKEE - Metavante, a banking and payments technology provider, and COCC, a FinTech 100 provider of next-generation technology services for community financial institutions, announced that sales and implementations for Branch Capture are outpacing 2006 sales. Branch Capture enables COCC customers to image-capture, proof and balance items on-site at branch locations. COCC installed Metavante Branch Capture at 110 of its 152 community bank and credit union clients since 2004, with an additional 20% installed in 2007 alone.

The New York Daily News provided a long profile on how consumers are surprised to find their credit unions also offer mortgages–just not the risky kind. The story profiled one member who had learned just that, and included quotes from New York State CUL CEO William Mellin, who noted that half of the state’s 499 CUs offer home loans. The story said that no New York credit union offers interest-only loans, negative-amortization adjustables or mortgages with low but short-term teaser rates, “When I was frustrated, he was the person who showed me how to get a deal done,” she said. “That’s how it’s supposed to be in a credit union.”

MADISON, Wis. - In a legal challenge long in the making, Community First CU, one of the biggest credit unions in Wisconsin, filed suit last week against the Internal Revenue Service in an effort to help clarify what credit union products and services are taxable under the unrelated business income tax.

WASHINGTON - The Coalition for CU Charter Options (CCUCO) will appeal a U.S. District Court ruling dismissing its suit against the NCUA over the agency’s conversion rules.

BURBANK, Calif. - Lockheed FCU has started its own 501(c) charitable organization which will be able to accept tax-deductible donations from members and outsiders to help finance community activities.

MILLVILLE, N.J. - With seed capital from a local bank, community activists here are seeking to charter a CU to help low-income residents. Tri-County Community Action said it is seeking to partner with local financial institutions and has contacted state regulators. James Quinn, mayor of this town west of Atlantic City, said Colonial Bank has made a $100,000 donation toward getting the CU started. Quinn is also a on the bank’s board. The CU was announced during a press conference by elected officials at which they announced an effort to cut poverty in half over the next 10 years. RICHMOND, Va. - Two local churches have joined with Virginia United Methodist CU to create a fund that will back small loans for eligible members. The churches have agreed to raise money for the Jubilee Assistance Fund, which will be deposited into a savings account with the CU that can be used as collateral to back a small loan for a church member. Participants in the program will be required to undergo financial counseling.
