ATLANTA - John H. Harland Co. has agreed to be acquired by M&F Worldwide Corp. for $52.75 a share, or $1.7 billion. M&F Worldwide is the parent of well-known check printer Clarke American, a strategic partner for more than 3,200 credit unions and banks. WALL STREET - Morgan Stanley confirmed long-whispered rumors and announced it will spin off its Discover cards division in an initial public offering some time next year, positioning the unit to better compete with MasterCard and Visa USA in the payments arena. The $330 million credit union cited issued raised by its auditor, RSM McGladrey, which is reviewing questions raised by NCUA on the 90-day vote to convert. The conversion was approved by members by a razor-thin 18 votes out of 5,100 cast.

HAWTHORNE, Nev. – The former chief operating officer at Financial Horizons CU was sentenced Wednesday to one to four years in prison for stealing more than $106,000 from the credit union. Carla Trujillo, 28, transferred the funds to her own account and other accounts over 30 months and used the funds for her own use, authorities said. Trujillo, of Hawthorne, formerly worked as president of finance and operations at the credit union.

DAYTON, Ohio – NCR Corp. said yesterday it will outsource production of its ATMs in the Americas and shuffle the manufacturing of ATMs among its overseas plants to save money, a move that will eliminate nearly 1,200 jobs. NCR has about 29,300 employees worldwide. NCR said the cuts will be made over the next nine months. ATM production in a number of locations -- including Dallas, Canada, and Sao Paulo, Brazil -- will be shifted to an outside manufacturer.NCR plans to move high-volume production of ATMs from Dundee, Scotland, to plants in Beijing, China; Budapest, Hungary; and Pondicherry, India. The announcement came just two days after NCR said it will spin-off its Teradata data storage operations from the ATM and financial kiosk manufacturing operations.

OMAHA, Neb. – A former teller supervisor at Metro CU was sentenced to five years probation, the first four on home confinement, for stealing almost $61,000 from cash drawers she was supervising. Jolyn Schmeling, 29, was found guilty of stealing the cash from tellers’ dispensers between June and September 2004. Th theft was uncovered during an internal audit and security cameras showed Schmeling accessing the cash dispensers in violation of the credit union’s policy.

SAN FRANCISCO – Better Branches, a CUSO specializing in workflow solutions, has teamed with SegmentOne, an outbound sales provider, to offer an outbound sales system designed to increase cross-selling ratios for members obtained through indirect lending channels. The system is aimed at helping credit unions convert single-service members into multiple account customers without increasing staff or training costs. The turnkey system takes a data feed from an indirect lending interface, analyzes the information, and develops credit offers that are unique to each member. Borrowers are contacted within 30 days of acquiring a loan and are cross-sold additional products and services.
