Chase Set to Build Center for Card Operations

Chase Manhattan Bank said its card services unit would begin construction soon of a 300,000-square-foot operations center in Tempe, Ariz.

The center, which will provide customer service, collections, and other processing facilities for its nationwide credit card portfolio, is slated to begin operations in early 1993. It will employ 500 people initially, the bank said, expand to 1,100 by the end of 1993, and 2,000 by 1995.

The bank unit of Chase Manhattan Corp. has about 10 million card accounts and more than $11 billion in card loans outstanding. Its Chase Bankcard Services Inc. unit has three other operating centers, in Delaware, Florida, and New York.
