Nationar Acquires Smartline Systems, a Telemarketer

Nationar, a provider of investment-management and item-processing services to U.S. banks, announced it has acquired a financial services tele-marketing and research company.

The acquisition, Smartline Systems Inc., headquartered in Buffalo, helps financial institutions market new products and gauge customer satisfaction with existing bank services. The company will operate as a division of Nationar, under the name of Smartline Systems Group.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

"In the past, we have focused our business largely on back-office types of services which help retain customers," said William Sheluck Jr., president and chief executive of Nationar. "This acquisition marks the beginning of our venture into services that will help bankers bring in new business and recover lost customers."

Smartline offers a wide range of banking-related marketing services, including consulting on the introduction of new products.

"Our business is really one of controlling information and teaching the banks how to effectively transfer it to their customers," said Mark N. Rieman, former chairman of Smartline and president of the new division.
