BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Central Bancshares of the South Inc. has acquired First Federal Savings Bank of Northwest Florida, Fort Walton Beach.
Terms were not disclosed.
As previously announced, Central will change its name on Friday to Compass Bancshares, uniting its banks in Alabama, Florida, and Texas under the Compass Bank name.
With this acquisition, Central will operate 30 bank offices in Florida with assets of about $500 million.
Liberty Bank in Salt Lake City had been "structurally unprofitable" since 2008, according to its regulators. Experts criticized the FDIC for allowing the bank's demise to play out in slow motion.
The New York-based bank says it will push its concentration of commercial real estate loans below 400% of risk-based capital over the next two years and focus more on C&I.
