Michigan.

Mayor Coleman Young of Detroit revealed last week which candidate he would like to succeed him.

Young endorsed Sharon McPhail, a division chief in the Wayne County prosecutor's office, for major. McPhail came in second in the city's crowded Sept 14 nonpartisan primary election for mayor. She will face top vote-getter Dennis Archer, a former associate justice on the Michigan Supreme Court, in the Nov. 2 general election.

Young said he will be voting for McPhail, saying it has become "increasing clear" to him that she has "what the job demands." He pointed out that McPhail "spoke consistently of the many issues that confront Detroit today and articulated specific programs to deal with those issues."

McPhail, one of 23 mayoral candidates on the Sept. 14 ballot, won 26%of the vote, while Archer, a partner at the law firm of Dickinson, Wright, Moon, Van Dusan & Freeman, received 53% of the vote.

Young announced June 22 that he would not seek a sixth term, but did not endorse any candidate in the primary election.
