Mobil Oil Corp. is accepting automated teller machine cards enhanced with Maestro in 7,100 of its locations nationwide. Maestro is MasterCard International's global on-line point of sale debit brand.
The largest debit-accepting retailer in the country, Mobil expects to expand Maestro acceptance to all of its 8,600 retail outlets by yearend 1995.
The company has accepted Visa's on-line debit product, Interlink, in California and Arizona since 1985. Mobil was one of the original Interlink merchants, which number 40,000 today.
Mobil accepts Interlink at 7,100 gas stations as well, and will expand acceptance to all outlets by 1995.
29,300 Locations
The addition of Mobil acceptance boosts Maestro's U.S. merchant network to more than 29,300 locations, and broadens its reach to all 50 states.
Mellon Bank provides the point of sale debit gateway processing services for Maestro transactions at Mobil, while Bank of America is the merchant bank for Interlink.
Arthur D. Kranzley, Maestro U.S.A.'s president and chief executive, said that Mobil's decision to complement its regional point of sale debit acceptance program by adding MasterCard's global brand reflects its commitment to enhancing customer service through expanded payment alternatives.
Mobil will be running a number of market area launches with Visa and MasterCard to educate consumers that they can use debit cards to buy gas and merchandise at Mobil outlets.
