Card briefs: U.S. to Pay $1 Million For Drexler Card System'

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Drexler Technology Corp., provider of a laser-optical card technology that competes with chip cards, received a $1 million order from the Army and the Department of Defense.

The orders consist of 10,000 optical memory LaserCards and 266 read- write devices used for recording digital data onto the optical cards and for reading them.

The U.S. government has deployed Drexler's cards in Korea, Germany, Haiti, Somalia, and several U.S. Army bases as a cargo manifest card for shipping, receiving, and identification.

Drexler also announced that the Republic of South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare will be issuing LaserCards to its population as a national health card.

The card, which will eventually be rolled out to more than 40 million people, will contain all medical information, including results of X-rays and other tests, vaccinations, medicines, and medical insurance.
