In Brief: Ahmanson Automates Application Taking

IRWINDALE, Calif. - The nation's largest thrift is joining the movement to automate the writing of home loans.

Home Savings of America said this week that all of its 550 loan consultants would now use laptop computers and portable printers to take loan applications.

The move is part of the H.F. Ahmanson & Co. unit's strategy to cut loan production costs and increase its volume, according to Frederic J. Forster, president.

The thrift said it expected to double its annual loan volume to about $20 billion as a result of the new technology and other measures.
