In Brief: Louisiana's United Cos. Sells Life Insurance Unit

United Companies Financial Corp. has closed the sale of its life insurance division, United Companies Life Insurance Co.

The unit was purchased by a subsidiary of Penncorp Financial Group for $167 million.

United Companies will put the capital back into its lending operations, said chairman and chief executive J. Terrell Brown, and United Companies Life will continue its operations in Baton Rouge.
