Card briefs: Travel-Entertainment Panel for Smart Card Group

The Smart Card Forum has established a travel and entertainment working group.

Headed by Robert Wesley, vice president of international development at American Express Co., the group will "act as liaison between the travel and entertainment industry and other forum efforts" to promote chip card technologies, said forum chairman Jean McKenna, who is also a Visa International vice president.

The forum said interest is greatest in a multi-application card that takes advantage of the chip memory to allow for payments, budgeting and expense reporting, reservations, and ticketing; and in a resort smart card that could be used for many purposes within a defined area.

The Smart Card Forum, which consists of more than 225 corporate and government entities, also recently set up a retailing working group to complement others in financial services, technology, and other fields.
