CoreStates to Offer PC-Based Remote Banking for Small Businesses

CoreStates Financial Corp. plans to offer small and midsize business customers a cash management service using remote transaction software from Checkfree Corp.

The Philadelphia-based bank, which offers various PC-based services to bigger companies, has never offered an electronic banking product to smaller ones, said Jeffrey Levy, a vice president in CoreStates' business segment marketing and development group.

The service to smaller companies will first be available in December, CoreStates said.

Ultimately it will enable business clients to view all their banking information as well as store and manage data - "anything they would have to go to the bank to do," said Lynn Busing, executive vice president of corporate financial services at Checkfree.

But initially the service, using Checkfree's Infovue software, will be limited to transferring funds among the client company's own CoreStates accounts. "Enhancements are planned," Mr. Levy said. "We're looking to become ACH-compatible."

Paul J. Citarella, vice president of sales for Checkfree, said he anticipated 2,500 small businesses would sign up.

"Corestates will now be able to provide broader levels of service to these important market segments as well as a platform for future growth," he said.
