Tandem Building an Intranet for CoreStates Unit

CoreStates Financial Corp.'s transaction processing subsidiary, QuestPoint, said Tandem Computers Inc. is building its corporate intranet.

The network is to use Tandem's Himalaya line of computer servers and software from Applied Communications Inc.

Through its two divisions, CashFlex and Transys, QuestPoint provides remittance and check processing for financial institutions.

By installing an intranet, which is self-contained corporate network based Internet protocol, QuestPoint's 16 processing sites will be able to swap information more efficiently, said George Laddey, manager of information delivery systems for QuestPoint.

The Tandem hardware "allows us to control things from a central location and yet have distributive processing out there close to where the data is actually captured," said Robert L. Evans, vice president of product management.

Beyond connecting different parts of the organization, QuestPoint's intranet also will link the company with select clients. "The beauty of the intranet-type technology is in the marriage of our messaging system and Tandem to be able to deliver this information in a real-time fashion directly into our customers' mainframes," Mr. Laddey said.
