Card Briefs: Mondex Test in Britain Is Extended to Buses

Mondex, the electronic cash alternative system owned by National Westminster Bank of London, will now be accepted on buses in Swindon, where the new payment cards are being tested.

Thamesdown Transport's 80 Swindon buses will accept the stored value cards embedded with computer chips, alleviating riders' need for change. Mondex cards are inserted into the payment terminal, and the appropriate amount is debited from the card.

This follows the introduction of Mondex in a number of parking garages and at British Telecommunications pay phones.

The standard payment system used on the buses was adapted to accept Mondex by Wayfarer Transit Systems and De La Rue Fortronic.
