Card Briefs: MasterCard Backing Internet Fraud Fight

The National Consumers League, with a grant of $100,000 from MasterCard International, is launching a program to monitor and report fraud over the Internet.

Internet Fraud Watch unites the consumer group with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general to combat devious business practices.

"We don't see a huge problem with Internet fraud at this point in time," said Joel Lisker, senior vice president of security and risk management for MasterCard. "But the opportunity for fraud will expand as Internet usage expands."

MasterCard joined with the consumer group in 1994 to establish the National Fraud Information Center, which fights telemarketing fraud.

Consumers can report on-line fraud through an "800" number or by sending E-mail messages to nfic internetmci.com.
