Card Briefs: 1st USA Going to Dogs - with Kennel Club Visa

The American Kennel Club is marketing a Visa card for lovers of purebred dogs. Offered through First USA Bank, the affinity card for those who register their dogs with the club can be embossed with the pet's name, and sports a picture of one of 20 breeds.

In addition to no annual fee, the card offers new members an introductory rate of 5.9% for five months, which jumps to 15.9%. Each time a club member uses the card, an unspecified amount goes to support American Kennel Club educational activities.

"It's a mutually beneficial program," said George McCane, senior vice president of corporate affairs and investor relations, First USA Bank. "The AKC benefits because it provides them with a revenue stream for programs that protect and promote purebred dogs, and it's a benefit to First USA to have the opportunity to market to that pool of card members."
