1st Tennessee National Offers Java-Based Home Banking Software

First Tennessee National Corp. has begun offering Internet-based home banking software based on Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java computing language.

The software, developed by Home Account Network Inc. of Charleston, S.C., lets bank customers pay bills, access accounts, and manage finances through any personal computer equipped with a Java-enabled Web browser.

"Using Java, we don't need a specific software for a specific platform," said Tripp Johnson, manager of new technologies for First Tennessee.

One attractive capability of Home Account's software is that it will "analyze an individual's or a family's financial position and help them meet financial goals for their particular circumstances," said Andrew T. Barrett, president and chief executive officer of Home Account Network.

The software includes as part of its analysis brokerage accounts, individual retirement accounts, and investment and saving patterns. On the liability side, it considers mortgages and other loans.

Home Account Network's other Internet products include the Balancer, a check register; the Java Teller Machine, a home-based ATM designed to work with smart cards; and BillPay, for electronic bill payment.

The company also is designing an investment manager that is expected to be available in the fall.
