In Brief: Financial Crimes Agency Chief Is Stepping Down

Stanley E. Morris, director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, announced Friday he is retiring.

Though Mr. Morris did not set a date, he is expected to leave the Treasury Department unit that guards against money laundering sometime next year. A spokeswoman said Mr. Morris, 55, decided to take advantage of early retirement after serving in the government for nearly three decades.

Mr. Morris, who has led the agency since May 1994, has enjoyed a good relationship with the banking industry. However, he has drawn fire from bankers lately who complain that Fincen's September proposal to streamline currency transaction reporting requirements would create new record keeping burdens.
