Card Briefs: ATM Card Use Rising in Western States

A Star System Inc. survey has found that consumers are increasing their use of automated teller machine cards.

Star, the largest regional ATM network in the United States and owner of the Explore point-of-sale network, surveyed 3,381 households in nine western states.

The survey found that ATM card use had increased from 10.6 times a month in 1995 to 12.2 times per month in 1996; use of point-of-sale debit grew from 2.7 times per month to 4.5 times monthly during the same period, it found.

Other findings:

Eighty percent of respondents reported getting an ATM card from their bank, compared to 78% in 1995.

Oregonians used their ATM cards the most, at 15.6 times per month.

Getting cash back at the point of sale increased from two times per month to 2.3 times, with women most likely to use the feature.
