In Brief: Banc One Plans an Offset to Indianapolis Cuts

Banc One Corp. is expected to announce today that it will add up to 750 credit card jobs in Indianapolis by the midyear 2000 to blunt the effect of merger-related job cuts.

As part of its merger with First Chicago NBD Corp., a large but undetermined number of positions are expected to be cut in Indianapolis, where the two banks have the most overlap.

A Banc One spokesman confirmed that the company is looking for sites in downtown Indianapolis for a call center for its card operations. The center would open in early 1999, and between 500 and 750 jobs would be added over 18 months, the spokesman confirmed.

Mayor Stephen Goldsmith has made a number of demands of Banc One and First Chicago to lessen the negative impact of the merger. He will make the announcement with Banc One Indiana chief executive officer Joseph D. Barnette Jr., according to the mayor's office.
