Card Briefs: 1st Data, Citibank to Use ACI Processing System

Applied Communications Inc. announced major sales of its transaction processing software to First Data Corp. and Citibank.

First Data, the leading credit card processing company, bought the Base24-POS system from ACI along with products from other Transaction Systems Architects Inc. subsidiaries. First Data will use Base24, the Trans24 settlement manager from USSI Inc., and ClaimTrack Client-Server from Crystal Clear Technology Inc. to beef up its debit card capabilities.

"First Data has always been committed to providing debit card-issuing clients with the advanced technology, scale of resources, and features and functionality they depend on for the success of their portfolios," said First Data Resources electronic payments group president Todd Strubbe. "Working with ACI will enable us to continue to drive down our costs, provide increased deposit-access functionality that many of our retail bank clients are demanding, and enhance our international point of sale processing capabilities."

Citicorp's principal subsidiary selected Base24 with a Tandem Computers Inc. NonStop Himalaya S7000 server to switch, authorize, and process debit and credit transactions.

Citibank will use the system initially in its European network of 100,000 POS devices generating 12 million transactions a month.
