Card Briefs: Hypercom Sells 30,000 Terminals, Software

Hypercom Corp. announced the sale of 30,000 terminals and accompanying software to Concord EFS Inc.

The deal includes Hypercom's ICE 5000 terminals and Ascendent SigCap, which is software that captures electronic signatures at the point of sale and stores receipts.

The sale also includes a system that helps merchants customize screens and printers.

Concord said the Hypercom products will help it differentiate itself from other processors by letting small and midsize merchants store and retrieve data faster.

Electronic receipts appeal to retailers because they are easier to retrieve than paper receipts in chargeback disputes.

Separately, Memphis-based Concord reported first-quarter operating income of $24 million, or 18 cents a diluted share, up from $17.5 million, or 13 cents, a year earlier.

This result excludes acquisition and restructuring charges of $26.9 million related to the purchase of Electronic Payment Services Inc., the transaction processing company that includes the MAC automated teller network.
