In Brief: Software Firm Licenses Sockets Technology

SLM Software Inc., which sells electronic commerce and on- line transaction processing systems, said it has licensed the Socks5 technology from NEC Systems Inc. to use in its Internet security technology.

SLM was one of several companies signing on for NEC's Socks5 Framework 3.0 when it was announced in April. Others were the data base leader Oracle Corp. and the smart card vendor Giesecke & Devrient of Germany.

Socks, short for Secure Sockets, is an Internet Engineering Task Force standard, now in its fifth version. It is designed to simplify "border control" security in such areas as virtual private networks and firewalls.

SLM said NEC's implementation of Socks5 enables it to support a wider range of authentication systems, including single-sign-on capability, for Internet transactions.
