Capital Briefs: '98 Home Mortgage Data on Hand at Banks

Data on 1998 home mortgage lending is available at individual institutions in metropolitan areas, the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council said Friday.

Regulators will release aggregate data on the 7,837 lenders covered by the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act in early August. The disclosure statements cite borrower's race or national origin, sex, and annual income. For most loans within a metropolitan statistical area, geographic location is disclosed.

The 1998 data include 24.7 million loans and applications, which is about 50% more than 1997. The council attributed the rise to a 112% increase in refinancing activity.
