Compass Taps White to Lead Its Jacksonville, Fla., Market

Compass Bank of Birmingham, Ala., has named the president of its northeast Florida community banking region as Jacksonville market president too.

Robert E. White succeeded Bennett Brown, who left to become president and chief operating officer of CNB National Bank in Lake City, Fla. Mr. Brown had joined Compass in January 1997, when it bought $171 million-asset Enterprise National Bank in Jacksonville; he was its president and chief executive officer.

Compass said Mr. White will continue to help vice chairman Charles E. McMahen with acquisition strategies in Florida.

Mr. White came to Compass in 1992 from Central National Bank in Winter Park, Fla.; he was chairman and chief executive officer of that bank, now part of Regions Financial Corp.

Still earlier he was executive vice president of community banking for Southeast Bank, which First Union bought in 1997.

Compass Bank is a subsidiary of $17.3 billion-asset Compass Bancshares.
