In Brief: Wachovia Names Chief Operating Officer

Wachovia Corp. on Friday named G. Joseph Prendergast president and chief operating officer.

Mr. Prendergast, who joined Wachovia in 1973, has been head of consumer and corporate banking and will hold that job along with his new responsibilities.

Wachovia has had no chief operating officer since 1994, when L.M. Baker Jr. vacated the post to become chief executive officer. Mr. Baker also had been president until Mr. Prendergast's promotion.

Also on Friday, Walter E. Leonard Jr. and Robert S. McCoy Jr. were named vice chairmen of Wachovia. Mr. Leonard heads the banking company's information systems and processing services, while Mr. McCoy is chief financial officer.

In addition, Wachovia said Beverly B. Wells, executive vice president of consumer credit, is now responsible for consumer banking, small business, and marketing. And chief executive of South Carolina banking Will B. Spence Jr. has added North Carolina to his territory.
