Yahoo to Stop Offering Bill Payments

Yahoo Inc. plans to discontinue its online bill payment service.

The Sunnyvale, Calif., company posted a notice on its Web site last week notifying users that the service will be discontinued Sept. 14. Data on bill payments will be available online through the end of October, so users can review their account information and download transaction history.

All accounts will be cancelled Nov. 1.

"We found that our users come to our site primarily for news and information," said Brian Nelson, a Yahoo spokesman. The payment service "falls too far outside of our core service."

He would not say how many people use the payment service.

The service was launched in September 1999, according to the site, and routed payments through CheckFree Corp.
