Ingenico Offers Details on Its PayPal Pact

Ingenico SA is working with PayPal Inc. on what the companies say is a faster way to improve the point of sale than investing in contactless mobile payments.

The French terminal maker's hardware is being used at tests of PayPal's system at the registers of five Home Depot stores.

The system they are testing is "straight to market, compared to trying to leverage another technology like [near-field communication], which everyone knows is coming, but it's not coming as fast as first expected," says Thierry Denis, Ingenico's president for its North America division, in an interview.

In the second half of the year, PayPal will offer coupons and rewards to users who transact at the point of sale with its system, Denis says.

PayPal, a unit of eBay Inc., is in similar trials with at least 20 other merchants.

VeriFone Systems Inc., a rival terminal maker, is also working with PayPal for similar technology at the point of sale, VeriFone said in a press release Monday.

Last week, AJB Software Design Inc. of Mississauga, Ontario said it is building PayPal acceptance into its software. The company's middleware is used by 110 U.S. retailers.
