A credit union located in the lobby of Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's building in Washington was robbed Wednesday.
Officer Josh Aldiva, a Metropolitan Police spokesman, said that the Treasury Department Federal Credit Union robbery happened at around 11:30 a.m. inside the OCC's headquarters. Mr. Aldiva could not offer further details because the Federal Bureau of Investigation was taking over the case since the crime happened inside a federal building.
Debbie Weierman, a spokeswoman for the FBI Washington field office, would not say how much money was stolen, but she said the agency was looking for one suspect who left on foot with a backpack. The suspect is not believed to have used a weapon, and no one was injured during the incident, she said.
Phone calls to the credit union were not returned.
In an e-mail to OCC employees Comptroller John Dugan said: "Our immediate concern is for the safety of employees and guests at the OCC headquarters building. We are reviewing security procedures to determine if additional safeguards can be put in place, and the credit union will be closed while we conduct this review."
