Recognizing veterans

The 1st Advantage FCU Foundation held a Medal of Honor Celebration dinner on March 25 in conjunction with National Medal of Honor Day. More than 100 people attended the event, which honored retired U.S. Army Captain Florent “Flo” Groberg, and raised over $15,000 to benefit the credit union’s foundation. Pen Air helps trio of nonprofits

Pen Air FCU, Pensacola, Fla., donated $15,000 to three local nonprofits during the first quarter of 2019 thanks to its jeans day program. The Secret Place, Children’s Home Society of Florida and the Santa Rosa Kids’ House all received gifts of $5,000.

Top volunteers

TBA Credit Union in Traverse City, Mich., was the winner of the 2018 Paul Bunyan Chapter Challenge. TBA participated along with several other CUs from that chapter of the Michigan CU League to see which institution could volunteer the most hours in 2018. Collectively the chapter’s credit unions provided more than 4,600 volunteer service hours last year.

"Students@Work"

State Employees’ Credit Union in Raleigh, N.C., hosted more than 70 students and faculty members from two area middle schools for “Students@Work,” an event which focuses on personal finance and career exploration. Students discussed budgeting, money management, making smart financial decisions and even the possibility of careers at the credit union.

Help for the homeless

Representatives of Hanscom FCU took part in a “Build a Bed” event to support the “Bed for Every Child” initiative from the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. Volunteers built 30 beds for area children in need of their own beds.

Staff from Firefly CU in Burnsville, Minn., attended the second annual Illumie Awards, an event to help staff collaborate and recognize excellence. As part of the event, the CU’s employees created “tie blankets,” which were donated to Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare.

Reaching a milestone

GEMC Credit Union in Tucker, Ga., is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding this year. The institution was started in 1969 to serve electric cooperative employees, and today has $127 million of assets and about 12,600 members.

To celebrate the milestone, the credit union hosted a special annual meeting at the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, Ga. Management also got nostalgic by sharing some old pictures, including the one above, which shows GEMC employees in 1997 helping to build a home during a Georgia Credit Union Affiliates Habitat for Humanity event. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich participated.
