A Basic Primer On Anti-Fraud Tools

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.-As credit unions continue to battle fraud across a variety of channels, (see related story), Credit Union Journal compiled this list of anti-fraud tools and terms:

Processing Content

Behavior Analysis

Through rules and/or analytics, behavioral analysis tools monitor the user session to detect suspicious activities or patterns and examine web navigation techniques to ID anomalies.

Knowledge-Based Authentication

KBA questions provide multiple-choice questions gleaned from credit report and demographic databases.

One-Time Password Tokens

A one-time password token supplies an expiring password, which changes on either an event- or time-driven basis.

Complex Device Printing

Complex device printing is the ability to look at a combination of identifiable hardware and software attributes associated with a computer or mobile device. The unique fingerprint associated with each device can be used to provide recognition of devices associated with fraud, as well as ongoing recognition of devices with trusted reputations. This differs from simple device printing that only leverages cookies, which is considered inadequate.

OOBA

Out-of-band authentication (OOBA) uses a communication mechanism that is not directly associated with the device being used to access the banking app in order to facilitate a second mode of communication. This is often accomplished by using a mobile device in conjunction with an online session to deliver a one-time password.

Client-Based Secure Browser

Client software is used to create a browser environment that is shielded from other applications on a computer. A hardware device such as a USB is used to facilitate a secure session that is protected from any malware that might be resident on the user's computer.

Digital Certificates

A digital certificate is an electronic means of establishing credentials when transacting over the web. Issued by Certificate Authorities, digital certificates establish the owner's identity and can facilitate secure communications through public-key encryption.
