RALEIGH, N.C. — Continuing its trend of red-letter-day loan promotions, ElecTel Cooperative FCU here is set to hold a limited time loan campaign tied to "International Talk Like A Pirate Day."
As CU Journal has reported in the past, ElecTel has a history of offering quirky single-day loan offers, tied to events like Friday the 13th, St. Patrick's Day, Black Friday and more. ElecTel CEO Nancy Long said in a statement that these promotions have brought in as much as $800,000 for the credit union, and members always look forward to the gimmicky promotions.
This time around the $42 million credit union is offering a 12-month personal loan with rates starting at 2.50%. Promotional collateral notes that the credit union is "offering ye a real barrrrgain." ElecTel is promoting the offer via its website and social media pages. While International Talk Like A Pirate Day takes place on Sept. 19, the credit union is accepting applications for the loans Sept. 4-19.
The "Talk Like A Pirate" promotion was the brainchild of BoMcDonald, president of South Carolina-based Your Marketing Co. McDonald also helped facilitate ElecTel's previous single-day loan promos, and has worked with many other credit unions in the region. He said in a statement that these kinds of promotions help credit unions differentiate themselves from the competition.
The holiday dates back to 1995 but did not begin to gain wide recognition until a Dave Barry column in 2002.
