Bankrupty Expert Bill Mapother Dies

William Mapother III, the well-known expert on consumer bankruptcy who taught thousands of credit union staff about related compliance issues, has died from lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis.

An attorney with Mapother and Mapother, he was a frequent writer and speaker, and was described thusly in one CUNA Lending Council white paper on bankruptcy: "Mapother is nothing short of a god when it comes to fighting bankruptcy."

"Few people could make the subject of bankruptcy law come alive the way Bill could," said Eric Richard, CUNA executive vice president and general counsel. "Many of us will long remember the lively debates he could provoke with his passionate views of the issues. He was also a steadfast and articulate advocate for credit unions in every arena. He will be sorely missed by the credit union movement."

Mapother's other claim to fame was being the uncle to actor Tom Cruise (born Thomas Cruise Mapother).

Services and a remembrance for Mr. Mapother were held in his hometown of Louisville.
