Banks, Spanks & Pranks

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The creative minds behind BankerSpank closed the year as they had begun it–unknown and unwilling to share their identities.

BankerSpank.com features video parodies of the famous Mac vs. PC TV commercials, in this case with Bank vs. Credit Union. The stiff PC character is recreated as the Banker, the more relaxed, “cooler” Mac character is the credit union.

The spots are slick, well-written and professionally produced, and certainly hint that whomever is behind them has experience in television advertising, perhaps an agency. But since their inception, the creators of BankerSpank, which does just that, spank the banks, has declined to reveal themselves. In e-mail interviews first with the Credit Union Journal and later with American Banker, an affiliate of the Journal, BankerSpank’s masterminds said the “Anonymity has kind of helped to fuel the fire, so to speak. It makes people chatter more. That’s good for the site, good for the spots, but more importantly, good for the issues.”

Bankerspank.com includes anti-banker items for sale, some of which are emblazoned with the message, “Hug a banker today ... Get a tetanus shot tomorrow.”

The backers of BankerSpank say they may someday reveal themselves, but not just yet. (c) 2007 The Credit Union Journal and SourceMedia, Inc. All Rights Reserved. http://www.cujournal.com http://www.sourcemedia.com
