Burd Designated A Sagamore of the Wabash

Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan has designated Loretta Burd, CEO of Centra Credit Union, a Sagamore of the Wabash.The award was presented during the Indiana league's Large Credit Union Roundtable here. The award is the highest honor the governor's office bestows, and is a personal tribute usually given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state or to the governor.

Burd joined Centra Credit Union in 1965, and has served as president and CEO since 1987. In addition, she is Chairman of CUNA Mutual Group and active in a wide variety of volunteer roles. Burd was inducted into the Indiana Credit Union League Hall of Fame in 1996 and she received the CEO of the Year Award from the Indiana Credit Union League in 1993. The term "sagamore" was used by the American Indian Tribes of the northeastern United States to describe a lesser chief or a great man among the tribe to whom the true chief would look for wisdom and advice.
