ONTARIO, Calif.-The California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues have named a search committee and hired San Francisco-based O'Rourke and Associates as the search firm to identify a candidate to replace Bill Cheney, who has been tapped to lead CUNA.
Brett Martinez, CEO of Redwood CU, Santa Rosa, Calif., is chairman of the seven-person search committee. "The committee is very diverse. We have people from large and small credit unions, from both Northern and Southern California plus someone from Nevada, a volunteer board representative, league board members and non-board members."
Cheney will step down from his CCUL/NCUL post July 4, and will assume his new role at CUNA July 5. The league board said it intends to fill the position in time for the two leagues' Annual Meeting and Convention, Nov. 15-17. No determination has been made about a potential interim appointment.
According to Martinez, the fact CUNA snapped up Cheney after just four years on the job is a compliment to how well the CEO search process was carried out last time. "The good news, in a manner of speaking, is we did this just five years ago and did a really good job. I haven't spoken with any of the other committee members about the criteria, but from my perspective we are looking for someone a lot like Bill."
