Robert V. Chaffino, CEO of Camino Federal Credit Union in Montebello, has been named the 2007 Leo H. Shapiro Lifetime Achievement Award, the California Credit Union League's highest honor.
Named for the father of the California CU movement and the founder of the California league, the Shapiro Award recognizes excellence in credit union philosophy and a lifetime of contributions to credit unions.
Chaffino's CU career began in 1972 as a manager for a small industrial credit union. His career took him from that small credit union to Medical Centers Federal Credit Union, where he oversaw the credit union's expansion in both field of membership and services. In 1998, he was hired as CEO of Montebello Schools Federal Credit Union (now Camino Federal Credit Union).
In March 2000, he was asked to serve as interim CEO of the Vernon/Commerce Credit Union and served as a mentor when a permanent CEO was brought on board.
An active advocate for credit unions, Chaffino has passed his love for credit unions to his daughter, who is an employee of another credit union.
