MADISON, Wis. - With news slow to come forward, the World Council of Credit Unions is working to ascertain whether any the rural credit cooperatives in China were affected by that country’s devastating earthquake earlier this week.
The quake’s epicenter was in the Sichuan Province, where some rural credit cooperatives, which are similar in operation to credit unions, are located. The World Council, which sees great potential for credit unions in China, has most recently done work in Guizhou Province.
By coincidence, at the time of the quake WOCCU’s Brian Branch was leading a group of Chinese in visits to credit unions in California.
WOCCU reported members of the delegation have been able to confirm their families were not affected, although some family members said they did feel the tremors.
The Chinese group remains in California. WOCCU is scheduled to take its World Forum to Hong Kong in July.
