Citibank To Test Pay By CellPhone

NEW YORK - (04/22/05) -- Citibank is planning a test pilotthat will allow consumers to pay by waving a Nokia cell phone pastpayment terminals. The project will involve several thousand creditcardholders using handsets that comply with Near FieldCommunication, an extension of contactless smart card technology.Nokia, the world's largest handset maker, already operates cellphone payments in Europe. NFC is designed to allow such consumerdevices as personal computers, mobile phones and portable musicplayers to communicate with each other via radio frequency, ascontactless smart cards do.
