Community Financial Credit Union in Michigan names new CEO

Community Financial Credit Union in Plymouth, Michigan, has named Tansley Stearns as its next president and chief executive.

The $1.3 billion-asset credit union announced that Stearns, who is currently chief operating officer of the $3.8 billion-asset Canvas Credit Union in Lone Tree, Colorado, will start her tenure at the helm of CFCU at the beginning of June. Stearns succeeds William “Bill” Lawton, who has been with the credit union since 1982 and announced his intention to retire this coming July.

“I believe in the possibility of the cooperative finance business model, and I love the state of Michigan … we will make impossible things a reality together as we create an impact for Michiganders for years to come,” Stearns said in a press release Wednesday.

Prior to her position with Canvas, Stearns also held leadership roles at the consumer finance think tank Filene Research Institute and with the $11.5 billion-asset Bethpage Federal Credit Union in Bethpage, New York, according to her LinkedIn profile.

“Tansley comes to us with a wealth of leadership experience in the credit union movement … her energy and passion for our members, communities and team will ensure our best years are still to come,” Lawton said in the release.
