CUANJ Reps Meet Local Candidates

HEIGHTSTOWN, N.J.-Representatives from the Credit Union Affiliates of New Jersey, along with credit union leaders, met with candidates Michael Ferguson (R-NJ) and Maryanne Connelly (D-NJ), who are vying for the District Seven congressional seat.They discussed the background of CUs, field of membership issues and legislation effecting the movement.

SFCU Names Scholarship Winners

DUMAS, Texas-Shamrock Federal Credit Union awarded 15 $500 student scholarship. The winners were Johnathan West, Kerri McAllister, Patrick Tufford, Angie Clements, Deidre Crawford, Kristi Livingston, Luke Evenson, Candace Leigh Ivey, Andrew Todd Templeton, Amanda Marie Berg, Neal Tufford, Jennifer Nichole Klein, Whitney Owens, Lindey Rehkopf and Susan Flores.

Yolanda Wheat Is Honored

LOS ANGELES-NCUA Board Member Yolanda Wheat was honored by CUNA, the California League and CUNA Mutual Group at a reception during the Democratic National Convention. Hundreds of delegates, credit union members and members of Congress were present to show their support.

Tampa Chapter Pledges $10,000

TAMPA, Fla.-The Tampa Chapter of the Florida Credit Union League was represented by volunteers form several Bay area credit unions at the Children's Miracle Network/All Children's Hospital Telethon. The chapter awarded a $10,000 pledge to the hospital during the telethon. Funds for the donation were raised by individual credit unions through the sale of cookbooks.

In additional news, the Tampa Chapter raised more than $7,000 for local charities at its seventh annual Tampa Chapter Golf Tournament, and volunteers form Tampa area credit unions are conducting classes on financial planning for Hillsborough County high schools.

MCU Hosts Voter Registration

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Residents of Jackson County registered to vote for the November elections during Mazuma Credit Union's voter registration drive held in-branch.

CTCU To Open Third Branch

GURNEE, Ill.-Community Trust CU has begun construction on its new branch facility, located at the Route 83 and Lake Street in Grayslake. The new branch is scheduled to open in February 2001. CTCU President John Bratsakis, Jr. said, "We continue to add services and programs to make the credit union more convenient and advantageous for our member owners, because their success is our success."

Park FCU Is Building New Facility

LOUISVILLE, Ken.-Park Federal Credit Union is constructing a new 2,808-square-foot facility in Tyler. The project was awarded to SON Corporation and the completion date is scheduled for November 2000.

America's CUs Raise $4.3-Million

WASHINGTON, D.C.-The nation's credit unions raised nearly $4.3-million for children's hospitals over the past 12 months, under the Children's Miracle Network's (CMN) Credit Unions for Kids program. Co-founder of CMN Marie Osmond stated, "It is truly a privilege for Children's Miracle Network to be associated with credit unions. Their wonderful and caring support makes a significant impact on America's communities."

LCU Sponsors Volleyball Event

WAUKESHA, Wis.-Landmark Credit Union sponsored the New Berlin Lions Club's Spike for Sight volleyball tournament, which helped raise more than $6,500 for programs for the blind, including Center for the blind, Guide Dogs and Lions camp for the handicapped.

Students Run Apple FCU Branch

SPRINGFIELD, Va.-Apple Federal Credit Union (AFCU) sponsored Lee High School students with its "Partnership for Business" project, which featured the student-run Lancer branch of AFCU. The branch allows each of the 441 student members real-time, on-line account access through Apple FCU's personal branch software. The students can make deposits, withdrawals, transfer money between accounts, apply for a loan, or sign up for a VISA check card A luncheon was held at the high school to thank the credit union. Among the guests were Apple CEO Larry Kelly, board members Joseph C. Lina, William Mason, and supervisor committee members Robert Simms and Joyce Bell. Apple FCU contributed $11,000 to the Lee High School Future Business Leaders of America Chapter this year, continuing a five-year partnership designed to create hands-on financial experience for Fairfax County students.

DANA FCU Awards 6 Scholarships

FORT WAYNE, Ind.-Dana Federal Credit Union awarded six students scholarships at a special presentation. The winners were Rebecca Moses, Jennifer Laird, Catherine Hoeppner, Rachel Greenfield, Andrea Schmalz and Stephanie Forsyth.

N.Y. League Awards Scholarships

ALBANY-The New York State Credit Union League announced the winners of its annual scholarship program. The winners of the $500 scholarships were Marita Sheldon, Craig Bucki, Alicia Sim, Kathryn Crocker, Krista Collopy, Jennifer Pugh, Jennifer Sreniawski, Kenneth Liu, Rachel Altbach, Melissa Threadgill, Brendan Dwyer, Carol Eun-Young Jin, Peter Sperl, Grace Siciliano, Jeffrey Zuber, Tracie Salvaggio, Nicole Privitera, Diana Richter, Alisa Parmiter, Richard McGrew, Kimberly Blasius, Kristin Aiken, Melanie Lowewnthal, Marie Krug and Tiffany Chao.

Omega FCU Honors Kids CU Week

PITTSBURGH, Penn.-Omega Federal Credit Union held a week-long celebration in honor of kids. Local firemen and police officers gave safety tips, including fingerprinting and photo IDs. gifts, balloons and cake were given to the hundreds of children who attended the event.

SFFCU Celebrate Members

SIOUX FALLS, Iowa-Service First Federal Credit Union held a member appreciation day celebration that included a pork BBQ, ice cream and door prizes. More than 1,700 members attended.

SJFCU Helps Disabled Students

DEPTFORD, N.J.-South Jersey Federal Credit Union sponsored the Bankship Basketball Celebrity Scholarship Shoot-out to benefit a scholarship program for students with disabilities.

More than $6,000 was raised at the event. SJFCU CEO Benjamin T. Griffith said, "This was an opportunity for us to support wheelchair athletes."

Wyoming League Honors Congress

ARVADA, Colo.-Representatives from the Wyoming Credit Union League attended the 17th annual Congressional Awards Event held in Jackson, Wyoming. The awards are presented to young persons ages 14 through 23 who accomplish goals in voluntary public service and personal development activities.

Wyoming leads the nation in the number of young people who have received the award.

"We are pleased to be able to sponsor this event, and at the same time visit with our delegation on a very personal basis. They are good people who truly see the value in encouraging these people," said League Chairman Dennis Vinson.

OCUL Holds Bi-Annual Conference

BEAVERTON, Ore.-OCUL Services, Inc., a subsidiary of the Oregon Credit Union League, held its bi-annual insurance conference which featured speakers Jim O'Dell, Robert Linder, Kevin Lentz, Jayne Hitman, Stacie Wyss-Schoenborn and Lisa Coates, all from CUNA Mutual Group.

$25,000 Willed To MSU CU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas-One of the founders of MSU Credit Union, Dr. Jay J. Gramlich, willed $25,000 to the credit union he helped established in 1955.

MSU Credit Union President Renee Hensley, said the $25,000 will be used to fund scholarships.
